“Villains”

Dwight Benson lay asleep, mumbling under his breath. His wife, Adele; sitting up in the bed, snacking on her vegan popcorn; quietly giggling. He once tried to bite her in her sleep, somewhat terrifying Adele, who smacked his face hard enough to wake him out of his restless sleep; but she loved him. She understood him. And needed him for herself, as well.
“Ditto,” she’d said, in a tone subtly more than a whisper.
“Ditto,” his reply deep and raspy. Adele’s awe that Dwight had heard her — even as he had for the last twelve years.

“It’s just bedrest, love. Besides, you’ve been clamoring to get caught up on our show.”
Adele fixed her face enough to crack a little smile. “I could go for some roti right now.”
“Your spot?”
“You know it,” she smiled. “I love you…you know this, right?”
“Something you need to say?” Adele noticed the look in his eyes. Maybe he knew, she thought. No, no way he could know. Could he? Adele’s throat lumped and she struggled a swallow, rotating her wedding ring with her thumb. “How long?”
Adele gasped a small gasp through quiet tears. “The doctor said we could still get pregnant for two months after — “
