“Spiked Lemonade Drinking, Waiting on A Seafood Pasta, Somewhere”
“How long have you known?”
“Eh – a few days now.”
“Well, I guess it’s a good thing that you aren’t too worried about it.”
“I’m not not worried about it, you know? Does that make any sense?”
“Sure.”
“Uh-huh.”
“I don’t get it.”
“Say what you have to say, Michael.”
“Rae, can we just enjoy this day.”
“Whatever – I’m sure you’re counting down.”
“Counting down for what?”
“I only get ten minutes. Seven down.”
“You never got it. And even now – why are you like this?”
“Because I’m scared.”
“I know.”
“Of course you know.”
“What about the kids?”
“They know – I couldn’t make up a business trip story, because they know all of my business. They are nosey.”
“Well, with good reason – ”
“Don’t start.”
“Haven’t said a word.”
“Good, ” she says, and I laugh.
“Some things never change.”
